Barking owls have also been known to give loud screeches during breeding season. Screeching usually occurs briefly after dusk and right before dawn. Some owls use a low, barking sound when they are surprised or frightened. This sound is given in sharp, sudden intervals to scare off threats.

Frightened barks may occur any time of night depending on when the owl feels threatened.

Infant owls are sometimes heard shrieking at night. Owlets operate on the same nocturnal schedule as their parents. In fact, owl-on-owl predation may be a reason why Western screech-owl numbers have declined.

As harsh as it sounds, the parents always feed the oldest and strongest owlet before its sibling.

Aside from hooting, owls make a variety of calls, from screeches to whistles to squeaks. The barn owl hisses when it feels threatened, which sounds like something from a nightmare. The smallest owl is the elf owl , which lives in the southwestern United States and Mexico. It will sometimes make its home in the giant saguaro cactus, nesting in holes made by other animals.

The long-legged burrowing owl lives in South and North America. One of the few owls that is active during the daytime, it nests in the ground, moving into tunnels excavated by other animals such as prairie dogs. Then, they'll surround the entrances to their burrows with dung and "sit at the burrow entrance all day long and it looks like they're doing nothing," University of Florida zoologist Douglas Levey told National Geographic.

But they're not doing nothing: They're fishing. The poop is bait for dung beetles, one of the owls' favorite types of prey.

But nobody had put two and two together," Levey, co-author of a study announcing the behavior, said. Owls eat a lot of rodents. A single barn owl family will eat rodents in a four-month breeding cycle. One owl can eat 50 pounds of gophers in a year. It is generally believed, however, that an owl is a portent of death especially if heard hooting in the village, and even more so if it is on the roof. Owls are instrument s of witchcraft in some cultures.

There are several species of owl in and around Clarens the most common being the Spotted Eagle Owl. They are often heard in the evenings hooting from trees on the slopes below the sandstone cliffs to the west of Clarens. The call sounds rather like a dog yapping but obviously, it is not a dog. Visitors to the bushveld areas will be familiar with the distinctive call of Scops owl. Owls hunt a wide variety of prey: small birds, lizards, mice and rats, insects and the like.
